UMass Boston Non-CM Students

There are various opportunities for students who are not in the management major in the College of Management to take management courses or complete specific academic programs or plans.

Partner Programs

In the College of Management, we consider students who have a management major course as part of a program or program of study they are in other than the management major Partner Program students. Students are offered the opportunity to enroll only in the CM course(s) required for that partner program on pre-determined dates. Examples of students in a Partner Program include:

  • IT Majors seeking Professional Electives;
  • Management Minors;
  • Exchange Students (International and National Student Exchange)

The College of Management Undergraduate Program Office will assist Partner Program students in the registration process for the necessary courses.  All course pre-requisites must be met before enrollment is allowed. Only students who have a partner program affiliation officially declared on WISER will be given preferential enrollment for the course required by the partner program.

Registration Information for Non-Management and Non-Degree Students

Non-Management Students

Non-management students may take up to a TOTAL of 18 credits (6 courses) in the College of Management from the management major. All CM courses must be requested on a Registration Request Form. Non-management students, including those in a partner program, will have delayed registration access to courses. This practice will give declared majors sole access to required major courses for a set period of time in an effort to help students stay on track for graduation.

Non-management students can take up to 18 credits (6 courses) from the following courses:

  • AF 210, AF 211, AF 301
  • BC 230, BC 290
  • MGT 303, 330, 331
  • MKT 301
  • MSIS 110, 111L, 212, 301

If a student wishes, they can take up to two courses from the College of Management from the following departments: AF, BC, MGT, MKT, MSIS, SCSM, and IT when cross-listed with an MSIS course.   These two courses would be in place of two courses from the list above and the total CM courses a non-management student can take will remain at 6 (18 credits). NOTE: MGT 490 cannot be taken by non-CM students.

Non-Degree Students

Non-degree students must also complete a Registration Request Form. They will also need to supply a copy of past transcripts that indicate the credits completed to date and note completed prerequisite courses. In addition, they must supply a course description and/or syllabus of the prerequisite courses that have been completed to date. In addition to seeking this approval in the College of Management, they will also need to have a student record set up at the One Stop Center (on the Upper Level of the Campus Center). They will supply you with a student ID number, which non-degree students must also put on their CM Registration Request Form. Once that information is submitted, it will be reviewed, and if approved, students will be added to the course. Contact the Undergraduate Program Office at upo@umb.edu to get more information.

Joining the College of Management as a Current UMass Boston Student

Students who do not gain entry to the College of Management when they initially enroll at UMass Boston can apply to join the College by using the Undergraduate Program Add/Change Form (formerly known as an InterCollege Transfer or ICT).  This allows a current UMass Boston student to transfer from one college to another at UMass Boston.

Application Process

To apply, students should complete the Undergraduate Program Add/Change Form for Management electronically. When completing the application for a transfer into the College of Management, please note that we do not require an essay, but we do require that you indicate which major you would like to join. In the College of Management, we have two majors: information technology and management. Students interested in the following areas (tracks) should select the Information Technology Major: Business Intelligence, Computer Forensics, Information Architecture and Systems Administration.  Students interested in the following areas (concentrations) should select the Management Major: accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems & business analytics, international management, leadership & organizational change, marketing, sport business, or supply chain and service management. You will need to indicate a major on the Undergraduate Program Add/Change Form. You will be able to declare a concentration or track once you have been accepted to the College of Management.

Students will be notified about the admission decision by email to the address provided on the Undergraduate Program Add/Change Form. Notification is usually sent to students about four weeks after submission of the application.

Students are admitted for a fall or spring semester only.  Admission is effective for the upcoming semester, not the current semester. The deadline to apply for admission for the Fall semester is August 1 and the deadline to apply for admission for the Spring semester is January 2.  Applications are accepted year round and reviewed a few times each semester as well as during winter and summer breaks.

College of Management Admission Criteria for Current UMass Boston students

We do not factor in the GPA earned at another college or university or grades from high school when making decisions in the major change process.

  • no incomplete grades ("INC") on their UMass Boston transcript

*Certain courses do not count in the credit totals, including: all academic skills courses, ESL courses below ESL 101, P.E. activity courses and Freshman Studies Seminar (OCAS 100)

Entrance to the information technology major is granted for students who meet the following criteria:

  • a UMass Boston cumulative GPA of 2.50 on regular coursework (coursework from an international partnership program may not be included in this calculation)
  • at least 12 college credits earned at UMass Boston as a full degree seeking student and have a letter grade assigned to them (i.e.: no "P" grades)*

Please note that exceptions to the admission requirements are not made. Students interested in transferring into the College of Management are encouraged to seek regular advising from the Academic and Career Engagement Success Center, as we typically advise only College of Management students who have 60 or more credits or who joined a CM learning community in the College of Management Undergraduate Program Office.
